I buy more than I mean to get at the supermarket today. Everything fits in my cloth shopping bag, but it’s heavy. I hope the handles don’t come off. It mostly holds the usual things: green apples, red peppers, white cheese, peanut butter, rice pudding, and a loaf of bread. I also buy low-calorie snack bars to restock my quarantine stash and coconut milk to make chicken curry. At least I think it’s coconut milk. The container says, in English, “coconut cream.” Only real milk is called milk here. Soy milk is vaguely labeled “soy beverage.” I try not to spend more than a hundred shekels on any one grocery trip. This purchase rings up at 99.51. I used to watch a game show where almost guessing the cost of something but not going over the real price was a big win. I guess I won. There’s no glamorous model in an overwrought evening gown, though, to give me a car. That’s probably good. Gas is expensive, and I wouldn’t have anywhere to park it. But at least I would be able to drive these heavy groceries home.
