The air on this bus tastes of sweat and citrus. The vents howl with a breathy moan, like tuneless monks. Some people on the bus juggle bags of groceries. Others hold backpacks on their laps, happy to take them off for a while. News alerts tell people to carry bottles of water and wear sunglasses and hats, but I see only two or three people who do. In my own basement apartment, I have only put on the heat and air conditioning once, to test them. Insulated by earth and with a cross-breeze from tiny windows overhead, I'm still comfortable. But it's only May.
