On the Boulevard of the Beautiful People, I walk down the median toward a rectangle of light lying on the path. A large grid of photographs rests on the bricks, a string of tiny white bulbs marking its boundaries. The frames of the prints reflect the light from the streetlamp, giving the display an even glow. A traveling artist has built this temporary gallery. Carefully lettered signs tell his woeful story, but with a hopeful twist: having lost everything, he says, he now wanders the world, capturing beauty wherever he sees it and presenting it to people in the next place he goes. A set of signs at the front of the grid announces his policy: passersby can spot what they like, take what they want, and pay what they can. I'm not moved to take or pay anything, but the image sticks with me as I walk on.
