At the ice cream shop, everyone is speaking English. I get in line. When I'm next, the old man behind the counter gestures at me. "You next?" I think he says. "A cup of the honey walnut yogurt," I reply. "No, no, no. You pay first. There." He points to a register further down the counter. I follow him to it. "Now," he says. "What you want? Cup? Cone? Large, middle, small?" I pay him for a small cup, then take my receipt and get back in line. The young guy with the scoop sounds North American. "What can I get you?" "Honey walnut yogurt?" I ask. "No yogurt, sorry." "But..." I point to the sign declaring the specials. "Yeah, that sign..." He sighs. "No yogurt." He shrugs. I shrug. I get a cup of black cherry gelato, go back outside, and sit down.
