A stack of white dinner plates caps the short pillar at the end of a pedestrian street. A cat, its fur a softer white, sits on top of them. On this adequate throne, it seems to say, humans can worship its glory. In front of the pillar at the far end of the block, empty boots stand at attention, as if waiting for orders from the cat. Between them: fallen flowers, dust on the paving bricks, and small reminders of pets that had come by before. I step around those. Dogs bark, hidden behind tall fences. The cat looks briefly toward the sound. Unimpressed, it continues to sit on its perch, silently surveying its realm.
