This larger produce market has dinosaur kale. I don’t think I’ve seen that here before. Most leafy greens are harder to find here than where I’d lived in the states. I grab the kale immediately. It will go well in JoeBowls. When I get to the registers, the cashier asks me if my bags of fruit and vegetables are from the displays outdoors. Those are usually cheaper. The apples and clementines are from outside. The peppers are from inside, as are the kale and a small package of blackberries that I take from a stack on display. They’re for the JoeBowls, too. When he rings up the blackberries, he says in English “I will give you a special price. Twenty five shekels for you.” That’s still steep, but it’s my only splurge. He looks at the kale and takes it to another worker. “One moment.” They chat. He returns. “Twelve shekels. Good?” That’s quite good, less than I expected. I put them all in my cloth shopping bag. I already have a challah in there. I get my usual hummus at the usual place. The line takes a maddeningly long time. The hummus hasn’t been as tasty as it was before the lockdown. I get an espresso at the cheap coffee chain and some gelato at a good place across the street. I would have gotten them together as an affogato, but the only place that seems to know about those is at the mall. I got too late a start to get there today. I’ll look forward to getting one there next week.
