A sign at the hospital food court divides it into clear zones. Meat restaurants are to the left, dairy to the right. Families sit clustered at tables throughout. I recognize many as religious Muslims and Jews. More women wear a greater variety of head scarves than I have seen anywhere else. Children sit with their families or run around. One little blond girl cries in her grandfather's arms. Another, almost her twin, zooms around on roller skates, crashing into pillars and trash bins. Maybe they figure that if she's hurt, she won't have to go far for treatment. I stop into the strictly kosher McDonald's before I go upstairs for a visit. I'm surprised that this one doesn't have coffee. At a cafe at the far end of the court, I get a coffee granita. It's the most expensive one I've ever had, but it's the best.
