Standing in line at my usual coffee shop in the early morning, I realize that I don't need more caffeine. I've lost count of how many espressos I've consumed working the overnight, and I would like to sleep today. Instead, I get an "ice limonana," something like a mint lemonade slushie. Since it's morning, I indulge in a large. By evening, they always run out of the large lids. I understand that the supplier is suing the coffee chain and wonder if the lack of lids is a tactic on the part of one side or the other. At the front of the shop, two women talk excitedly in what might be Hindi. A man without a shirt bellows into his phone in Arabic. Pigeons squabble over spilled snacks that look like smaller, beige Cheetos. Overhead, the sound system plays "This Is America," loud.
