A revelation: prices at the supermarket in the mall are no worse, and some are better, than where I usually shop. Eggs, challah, butter, and cheese are price-controlled. Much of the rest is on sale. (My mother has taught me well.) On the bus home, two teenage girls in matching white t-shirts hug, not holding onto the poles or straps, laughing. They hope their four-footed stance will be more stable as the bus wobbles and turns. It isn't. The overhead display shows a cooler temperature and a different time. Maybe the bus is dreaming of being somewhere else.
